2009 H1N1 FLU INFORMATION Nov 18

NOTE: H1N1 vaccine will begin to be generally available to persons in priority groups beginning the first week of November. But not everyone will be able to get vaccinated at once. Please be patient. Vaccinations will continue through November and December. It's never too late to get vaccinated!

At this time, Essex County Public Health Department is aware of some private health care providers in our county that have ordered H1N1 flu vaccine. Check with your regular health care provider to see if he/she will offer their patients the H1N1 vaccine.

Essex County Public Health Department will continue to hold immunization clinics to administer H1N1 flu vaccine. H1N1 vaccine will not be delivered at once, so your patience is appreciated. Clinics will be scheduled once we have sufficient vaccine available. Check this website frequently for future clinic dates and locations.

Clinics to administer H1N1 flu vaccine are scheduled for the following:

Clinics for Target Groups  Nov 18
Please check back for the next scheduled community clinic.

CDC target groups include:

  • pregnant women,
  • people who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age,
  • healthcare and emergency medical services personnel,
  • persons between the ages of 6 months and 24 years old, and
  • people ages of 25 through 64 years of age who are at higher risk for 2009 H1N1 because of chronic health disorders or compromised immune systems.

School-Based Clinics  Nov 18
Essex County Public Health is scheduling school-based clinics by district as vaccine supply allows. School districts will be given packets of vaccination information to be distributed to parents including a consent form to review and return to the school prior to the clinic date.

The following will be offered vaccine at school-based clinics:

  • Children enrolled in the school.
  • School nurse(s), school nurse aide(s),
    school nurse substitute(s),
  • Staff of the school who are currently pregnant.

Scheduled Schools include:

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 - Crown Point Central School

Please check back for other scheduled school-based clinics.

The following sheets include information about the 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine, who should get the vaccine, and more.

H1N1 Vaccine Questions? ...ask Dr. Anne
Aug 20 *
film clip from the Dr. Anne show H1N1 Vaccine Questions? ...ask Dr. Anne  * There is updated dosage information as of October 5 that is not included on this podcast. It is as follows:
Will two doses of vaccine be required?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of one dose of 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine for persons 10 years of age and older. This is slightly different from CDC's recommendations for seasonal influenza vaccination which states that children younger than 9 who are being vaccinated against influenza for the first time need to receive two doses. Infants younger than 6 months of age are too young to get the 2009 H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccines.
What will be the recommended interval between the first and second dose for children 9 years of age and under?
CDC recommends that the two doses of 2009 H1N1 vaccine be separated by 4 weeks. However, if the second dose is separated from the first dose by at least 21 days, the second dose can be considered valid.

SEASONAL FLU INFORMATION  Nov 12

NOTE: Your own doctor may be your best option for getting seasonal flu vaccine. Many health care providers have received supplies of seasonal flu vaccine, while other providers are still waiting to receive their vaccines.

Essex County Public Health Department DOES plan to hold an immunization clinic to administer seasonal flu vaccine.

Please check back to this website for the next scheduled clinic.

The following sheets include why get vaccinated, who should get vaccinated, details about the vaccine, and more.

The seasonal flu vaccine will not protect against 2009 H1N1 Flu. There is an additional vaccine for 2009 H1N1 Flu.

There may also be other sources of seasonal flu vaccine available locally such as pharmacies and other retail outlets. Check http://www.flucliniclocator.org/ to see if there are any vaccine clinics scheduled at retail outlets near you.
